12 Month Prescriptions – Patient Information

From 1 February 2026, the maximum amount of medicine that can be supplied on one prescription is changed from 3 months to 12 months.
It’s important to remember that even if you get a 12-month prescription, this doesn’t mean you won’t need to see your Prescriber. Having regular check-ups are still important to make sure your treatment is safe and working well.
If you have a long-term health condition, and your condition is stable, meaning your symptoms are under control and your treatment is working well, your healthcare provider may decide it’s safe and appropriate for your medicine to be prescribed for an extended period.
If your condition isn’t stable and your treatment may need to change, you won’t get a 12-month prescription as your Prescriber needs to review and adjust your treatment safely.
Ultimately, your Prescriber will make the final decision about whether a 12 month prescription is appropriate for you.

Who may be eligible?

You may be eligible for an up to 12 month prescription if:
  • Your condition and medication dose have been stable for at least 6 months
  • Your medicine does not require regular monitoring (such as blood tests or blood pressure checks)
  • The medication is approved for extended prescribing
  • You agree to attend an annual in-person review with your clinician

Who is not eligible?

An extended prescription will not be issued if:
  • The medicine is a controlled drug (e.g. some strong painkillers, some ADHD medication)
  • The medicine is taken only as needed
  • Ongoing monitoring is required within 12 months
  • Your condition or medicine has changed in the past 6 months
If your medication is changed at any time, the extended prescription will be cancelled.

Important information

  • The final decision rests with your prescriber
  • For some patients, a 6 month prescription may be a safer option
  • You will only be allowed to collect up to 3 months supply at a time from pharmacy
  • You must use the same pharmacy for the full 12 months, or a new prescription will be required
Please talk to your clinician at your next appointment to see whether an extended prescription is suitable for you
